Veil chat: your card is your account

Talk in servers and channels at veil.rip/chat/, signed in with the card this browser already holds.

The Veil chat is at https://veil.rip/chat/, with servers, channels, threads and boards as on Discord. There is no chat account to make. A browser that holds a card’s key is already signed in, and the name, picture and badges people see come from that card. You change them on the card, and each change goes through the public log as before.

Every message is checked#

A device key of the author’s card signs each message, and the reader’s browser checks the signature against the card before showing it. The author’s name turns blue only when the check passes. Someone who steals one of your other accounts still can’t write here as you, because that takes a key from one of your devices.

No card yet#

An invite to a server opens at /chat/invite/<code>. Without a card, the page sends you to make one or to log in, and the address keeps the way back. Once your card is ready, or this browser is on it, you are back on the invite.

next must be a path on veil.rip that starts with a single slash. A full address, or anything that could lead to another site, is ignored, and the page ends on your card as usual.

On someone else’s card#

Open another person’s card in a browser that holds yours, and the card lists, under Organisations, the chat servers you both belong to, with a link to their board. The list comes from GET /chat/api/members/{n}, signed with your key, and only your browser sees it. A visitor gets the card without it.
